The 61-year-old announced on Graham Norton that he tried out for the musical but confessed that his voice would have ‘scared the children’ and so stuck to being the producer.

In a conversation about Meryl Streep, he was asked why they have never worked together, and it has taken up until their new movie The Post to feature in the same film.

The father-of-four said: ‘There was never a whiff of it before, but I was a producer of Mamma Mia and I tried out for a role.

‘I wanted to hire myself, but my singing voice would have scared the children so this is the first time I’ve got to appear with her.’

The conversation drifted and he was then asked about how he feels portraying living people.

He said: ‘I like to meet them – I seek them out and say to them, “Look, I’m playing you for good or bad, deal with it.

As you, I’m going to say things you never said, I’ll go places you never were, and I will do things you never did, but, that being the case, I’d like to be as authentic as possible!”‘

The Graham Norton shows airs tonight on BBC One at 10.35pm.
