21 Of The Best Disney Songs To Ever Exist, Period.

Hello. It me. Certified Disney-song lover. With all the sequels and reboots coming out this summer, what better time than now to reflect on the tunes of my childhood and list the best ones?

So, let’s dive right in, shall we?

21. “Fixer Upper” from Frozen

Y’all are sleeping on this song. This is the best song in Frozen, hands down — though, let’s face it, the whole soundtrack slapped. When this song played in the movie, I was so bummed when it ended. “Everyone’s a bit of a fixer upper, that’s what it’s all about!” Like, did not expect this children’s song to read my existence to filth. The whole message of this song is that no one should seek perfection, but they should seek love! How can you not love that?

Best lyric: “But when push comes to shove, the only fixer upper fixer that can fix a fixer upper is true love.”

20. “You’re Welcome” from Moana

Things Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson did with this song: THAT! This is low-key the cockiest song to ever come out of a Disney movie — actually, any movie — but if I was a demi-god, you better believe I’d go around telling the plebs they should thank me! At least he’s polite with his arrogance and, let us not forget, he set it to a catchy tune! All in all, this song is a MOOD™.

Best lyric: “There’s no need to pray, it’s OK, you’re welcome, I guess it’s just my way of being me.”

19. “Almost There” from The Princess and The Frog

Whew, chile. Sing it, sister! Sure, Tiana is a newer princess, but her impact on me is mighty! I love the message of this song. She doesn’t care what people think because she’s within spitting distance of achieving her dreams. I stan a queen who works for what she wants.

Best lyric: “I remember Daddy told me fairy tales can come true, you gotta make ’em happen, it all depends on you.”

18. “One Of Us” from The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride

Even though this song is about casting out Kovu — my fave Disney character — I can’t help but love it. It packs a PUNCH. The scene is really sad and heartbreaking, but this song is so well done and beautifully arranged. The flute, the animal chorus, the heavy bass? I C O N I C.

Best lyric: “Let him run, let him love, but do not forget what we cannot forgive!”

17. “Son Of Man” from Tarzan

Phil Collins can do no wrong. This song was so catchy and groovy, it had me sliding around like Tarzan does on those tree branches. Plus, I love an aging-sequence set to music.

Best lyric: “Some day you’ll walk tall with pride, son of man, a man in time you’ll be.”

16. “A Girl Worth Fighting For” from Mulan

I love this song ’cause it gives all the other characters in Mulan a chance to shine! Instead of complaining about going off to battle, they’re focusing on the important things in life. I’ll be the first to admit that this song didn’t age ~particularly well~, but dagnabbit if this catchy tune doesn’t pull at my nostalgic heartstrings!

Best lyrics: “Uh, how about a girl who’s got a brain, who always speak her mind?”

15. “Go The Distance” from Hercules

This song makes me weep. It’s a beautiful ballad about a boy, not looking for a girl, but looking for a place to beloooonnng! When Herc belts out that last note, it literally sends a chill down my spine.

Best lyric: “It’s an uphill slope, but I won’t lose hope, ’til I go the distance and my journey is complete.”

14. “The Bare Necessities” from The Jungle Book

This song makes me wanna put on a top-hat, grab a jazzy cane, and tap dance. It’s a grand ol’ time.

Best lyric: “That’s why a bear can rest at ease with just the bare necessities of life.”

13. “Under The Sea” from The Little Mermaid

Talk about wanting to dance! I’m dancing at my desk right now just thinking about this song. Whenever I hear that opening beat with the steal drums, it makes me wanna smile and shimmy. As someone who is generally afraid of water, this song is so good, it makes me wanna dive in head first.

Best lyric: “Down here all the fish is happy, as off through the waves they roll, the fish on the land ain’t happy, they sad ’cause they in their bowl.”

12. “Reflection” from Mulan

I remember being a kid, going around and singing, “When will my reflection show who I am inside?” like I actually lived through hardships. Plus, that Christina version? Insane. The song is about hardships, self-identity, and wiping off one’s caked-on face in one fell swoop. To this day, I still hum this song every night when I take my makeup off.

Best lyric: “On that day, I’ll discover someway to be myself, and to make my family proud.”

11. “Beauty And The Beast” from Beauty And The Beast

You know what this song is about? Growth. Also? Ornate ballrooms. This song gets me every friggin’ time. I stan a powerful ballad about overcoming one’s misguided assumptions. We can all learn from this song.

Best lyric: “Bittersweet and strange, learning you can change, finding you were wrong.”

10. “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from The Lion King

Anyone who says this song doesn’t put a pep in their step is a liar! Visually compelling with all the colors, plus the animal choir providing backup vocals, AND that sick beat? This song is, quite literally, the whole package.

Best lyric: “Let’s hear it in the herd and on the wing, it’s gonna be King Simba’s finest fling.”

9. “A Friend In Me” from Toy Story

It’s hard to put into words how much I love this song. Y’all have heard it, so you get it. It just brings me back to a simpler time, and regardless of the mood I’m in when I hear it, it lifts my spirts.

Best lyric: “And as the years go by, our friendship will never die, you’re gonna see, it’s our destiny. You’ve got a friend in me.”

8. “Bella Notte” from Lady And The Tramp

This song is a wee bit of a deep cut, but it’s just so romantic. If someone serenaded me with this song IRL, I’d be putty in their hands. Every time I think of this song, let alone HEAR it, it puts a smile on my face. Plus, it’s one of my favorite Glee covers, so this song has no flaws.

Best lyric: “Look at the skies, they have stars in their eyes, on this lovely Bella Notte.”

7. “Zero To Hero” from Hercules

THE MUSES FROM HERCULES ARE THE MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED CHARACTERS IN THE DISNEY CINEMATIC UNIVERSE. PERIODT. I would love to have them as my personal hype women. This song hits in every way a song is supposed to hit: it’s got the soul, it’s got the spunk, it’s got the juice. It’s got it all!

Best lyric: “From zero to hero, Herc is a hero, now he’s a hero. Yes indeed!”

6. “Circle of Life” from Lion King

“NAAAAANTS INGOOOONYAMAAAA!” The literal definition of iconic. Also, the song is so powerful. Things come and things go. It’s the circle of life. This ballad has actually gotten me through some tough times. I cannot wait to ball my eyes out in the theater during the live action Lion King when this song plays.

Best lyric: “And it moves us all, through despair and hope, through faith and love.”

5. “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin

This song is Catchy with a capital C. I honestly could care less about Aladdin and Jasmine — just give me the Genie and that french horn any day of the week. This song is so good and if you don’t agree, please allow me to show you the exit, ’cause I can’t have that kind of negative energy in my life.

Best lyric: “So what-cha wish? I really want to know. You got a list that’s three miles long, no doubt, well, all you gotta do is rub like so!”

4. “Be Our Guest” from Beauty And The Beast

This song brings together two of my fave things: a jivey tune and dancing inanimate objects. Talk about dinner and a SHOW! This song ruined meals for me as a kid ’cause it would always make me mad that my fork never got up and danced for me. Regardless of that, this song just makes me really happy. Simple as that.

Best lyric: “Try the grey stuff, it’s delicious. Don’t believe me? Ask the dishes!”

3. “Upendi” from The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride

Kovu and Kiara are my fave couple in the Disney Cinematic Universe, and this song always reminds me of their beautiful romance! When you first hear the song, you think Upendi is a place, but alas, it’s not a place, but rather a state of being. Being in Upendi is being in love! If that doesn’t warm the cockles of your heart, then I don’t know what to tell you.

Best lyrics: “It just takes two to make it true. Your heart will lead you there.”

2. “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” from Mulan

There are few things I love more in life than an improvement-montage set to music. Actually, only one: Shang’s animated abs. But, aside from this song being a BOP and me knowing all the lyrics, word for word — even the 2 beat pause between “defeat…the Huns!” — I truly love that even though this song is about “men,” it’s actually Mulan’s COME UP STORY. She was like, Imma persevere and be the best soldier in this joint. Ironically, this is one of the most feminist songs in the DCU.

Best lyric: “With all the strength of a raging fire, mysterious as the dark side of the moon!”

1. “Hakuna Matata” from The Lion King

This song has shaped both my formative and early adult years. Whenever I’m buggin’? Hakuna Matata. Going through a bad breakup? Hakuna Matata. Stressed about my fave characters in a TV show? Hakuna Friggin’ Matata. I burned a hole in the VHS tape we had of The Lion King ’cause I kept rewatching this scene on repeat. This song made me feel like I was the coolest kid on the playground ’cause no other kids in my grade were from Africa or knew Swahili, so I felt like it was all mine. Still feel that way, to be honest.

Best lyric: “It means no worries, for the rest of you days.”

This list make you feel nostalgic? Well, lucky for you, I made a convenient lil’ playlist of all the songs listed above! Lemme know if I missed one in the comments below!
