Most people remember British comedian Benny Hill for his slapstick, risqué humour.

But in real life, the multi-millionaire funnyman was riddled with insecurities about his self-worth and had a morbid fear of spending money.

In Hollywood journalist Craig Bennett’s new book, True Confessions of a Shameless Gossip, he recalls speaking at length about Hill with one of his close friends, the late Australian actress Sarah Kemp.

According to Sarah, Benny spent hours confiding in her about how he felt unloved and unattractive to women, despite his over-sexed on-screen persona.

And although he was a multi-millionaire, Hill was extremely tight with his money and had dreaded spending it.

So much so that he would wear the same clothes until they were threadbare and would even glue the soles of his shoes back on when they became loose.

The comic would only buy groceries when they were on sale, and would walk to the BBC rather than pay for a taxi.

Owning a car or his own home was out of the question for Benny, too, according to Sarah.

Hill, who died in 1992 at age 68, is best remembered for his comedy program, The Benny Hill Show.
