Emma Watson slammed for her “cringe” American accent in Little Women trailer

The trailer for the new adaptation of Little Women has been released but not everyone is pleased.

The new take on the literary classic by Louisa May Alcott comes from Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig and stars Saoirse Ronan , Emma Watson , Eliza Scanlen, and Florence Pugh as the central March sisters.

The film follows the trials and tribulations of the March girls, including romances and career plans in the 1800s.

However, despite the adoration pouring out for the footage, including from eager fans of Saoirse Ronan and co-star Timothee Chalamet as Jo March and Theodore “Laurie” Laurence, respectively, one member of the cast is already being criticised.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson is coming under fire for her American accent as viewers took to Twitter to rinse her voice as Meg March.

One user wrote: “Why is Emma Watson the only British actor who can’t even do the most basic American accent lol cringe at her in this new Little Women. I can only imagine what her marble mouth will do”

Another concurred, saying: “The only thing that pisses me off from the Little Women trailer is Emma Watson’s accent. Ronan cam perfected hers why cant you GEEEEEEEZ! I have issues w Emma’s accent for the longest time”

Others were very adamant: “the Little Women trailer looks great but please stop casting Emma Watson in anything where she has to do an accent”

Yet another wrote: “the little women trailer was cool emma watson cannot do an american accent but i liked it otherwise”

However, considering Emma Watson barely speaks in the trailer it isn’t much to judge.

Some felt the accent was good and the critics were just being mean for no reason.

A fan wrote: “As the self-claimed accent expert, @EmmaWatson ‘s accent was fine in the Little Women trailer. Give it a rest ya over sensitive muppets. What u hear is probably just old refinement and not the swill we speak today. At least that’s what I’m going with”

And another agreed: “I was expecting to gasp in horror at Emma Watson’s accent in the Little Women trailer and then it didn’t bother me at all. Perhaps y’all are just mean.”

Perhaps?

What do you all think?

Little Women is released in UK cinemas on December 27, 2019.
