Emmerdale actor James Moore has taken aim at Piers Morgan, branding him “transphobic” after the presenter’s rant on Good Morning Britain that he identified as a penguin.
Piers, 54, asked what was wrong with being “male or female”.
When co-star Charlotte Hawkins said that people should be what they wanted to be, Piers insisted that “no they can’t”.
As Susanna was speaking he interjected, saying: “I’m a penguin! Identifying as a two spirit penguin! Everyone happy with that? Two spirit, gender neutral pan-gender, gender fluid, femme penguin.”
However when GMB tweeted the clip this evening, soap star James, who plays Charity’s son Ryan in Emmerdale, didn’t see the funny side.
He wrote: “This ain’t funny, it’s transphobic. Can we stop mocking gender identities and help normalise it?
“We need to be accepting and break the stigma. People are gonna be terrified into keeping quiet and aren’t going to be comfortable in their own bodies because of comments like these.”
His followers were divided over the tweet, with one commenting: “Not a fan of his but he actually said he was pro transgender so how is he transphobic?? Its the “100 different genders” he is against. Eg a sis man? Is actually just a man. A man who is happy in his gender is just a man it does not need a new name. Just pointless.”
In response, James wrote: “I don’t know- again I didn’t catch the whole thing. The cis tag is actually useful. Some men are not cis men and prefer to be called otherwise. The comments are still transphobic, in or out of context, they’re mocking very real issues.”
While another fumed: “Jesus its a bloody joke get a grip ffs pc correct gone to far.”
But James wryly remarked: “He should try making funny jokes, that’d be a change.”
