Thom Yorke shares haunting new track ‘Hands Off The Antarctic’ in support of Earth’s largest protected area

“The Antarctic is a true wilderness and what happens there affects us all. That’s why we should protect it.”

Thom Yorke has unveiled a new track titled ‘Hands Off The Antarctic’, released in support of Greenpeace’s campaign for a vast Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary.

The Radiohead frontman shared his latest offering from the Suspiria soundtrack last week. ‘Volk’ marked the third release from the musician’s 25 original compositions, which have been created for Luca Guadagnino’s reimagining of the 1977 film. It followed the melodic ‘Suspirium‘ and the otherworldly ‘Has Ended’.

Now, Yorke has released a new track and video highlighting the natural beauty of the Antarctic.

Backing a 2 million-strong campaign for the largest protected area on Earth, the track was unveiled with a stunning 3D projection on London’s Marble Arch this evening (October 16). Check out the image below.

‘Hands Off The Antarctic’ is set against stark, black-and-white footage of landscapes and wildlife, which was gathered during a three-month Greenpeace expedition to the area earlier this year.

“There are some places on this planet that are meant to stay raw and wild and not destroyed by humanity’s footprint,” Yorke said. “This track is about stopping the relentless march of those heavy footsteps.

“The Antarctic is a true wilderness and what happens there affects us all. That’s why we should protect it.”

The video features footage captured from the Greenpeace ship, ‘Arctic Sunrise’.

“The Antarctic doesn’t have a voice,” said Frida Bengtsson from Greenpeace’s Protect the Antarctic campaign, “but we are a movement of two million people and we do.

“We’ve seen around the world what happens when we don’t put areas off-limits to human activity. This vast wilderness is more fragile than we might think and plays an important role for the planet’s climate and ocean systems.”

Bengtsson added: “When governments meet over the next two weeks, they have an opportunity to make history. Millions of people from around the world are urging them to seize this moment.”

Meanwhile, Radiohead are among the nominees for 2019’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. The band join the likes of Stevie Nicks, Roxy Music and Def Leppard on the list.
