Hero dad tells how a wolf ripped its way into his family’s tent and tried to drag him into the forest as he leapt in front of his young family to save them in the Canadian Rockies

  • Matthew and Elisa Rispoli were camped in the Canadian Rockies on Thursday
  • A wolf dragged Mr Rispoli from his tent as he shielded his wife and children
  • Russ Fee heard their shrieks and sprinted over to kick the massive animal
  • Mr Fee and the Rispolis then dashed to his minivan and authorities arrived

A heroic father threw himself in front of his young family as a ferocious wolf ripped their tent apart in the Canadian Rockies.

Matthew and Elisa Rispoli, from New Jersey, were asleep with their children when a ferocious wolf descended on their tent last Thursday in Banff National Park.

Mrs Rispoli described how her husband threw his body in front of her and their sons, pinning the wild animal down and holding open its jaws with his hands.

‘The wolf started to drag Matt away,’ Mrs Rispoli wrote on Facebook, ‘while I was pulling on his legs trying to get him back.’

Russ Fee, who was at a nearby campsite, heard the couple shrieking and rushed over with a lantern in hand.

‘A guardian angel from the tent site next to us, who we later found out was named Russ, heard our screams and came over to our site and kicked the Wolf and it finally let go of Matt.’ Mrs Rispoli wrote.

Mr Fee, from Calgary, saw the massive wolf dragging Mr Rispoli by the arm from the tent, while Mrs Rispoli desperately clung to his legs.

Mr Fee told CBC: ‘I had a good run going at the time … and it was just so quick and the screams were so intense, that I knew it was obviously a terrible situation, so I just kind of kept running at it and I just kicked it sort of in the back hip area.’

The animal let go of Mr Rispoli but held its ground.

‘I felt like I had kind of punched someone that was way out of my weight class,’ Mr Fee told the broadcaster.

Mr Rispoli, who was covered in blood, then joined his savior in throwing rocks a the wolf while the Rispoli family dashed to Mr Fee’s minivan.

The American family were later able to get to Banff hospital where Mr Rispoli was treated for puncture wounds and cuts to his arm.

Mrs Rispoli wrote: ‘It could have been so so much worse, and we are just feeling so thankful that we are all still sitting here as a complete family. Matt is our absolute hero (I mean, way more than he normally was) and we are forever grateful to Russ who came to our aid and likely saved Matt’s life.

‘I love you Matthew – thank you for being our hero, a complete f***ing badass and for fighting with everything in you.’

Parks Canada tracked the wolf down, identifying it by its DNA found on Mr Rispoli and killed it.

A spokesman said on Tuesday: ‘Veterinary tests have confirmed that the wolf was in poor condition and likely nearing the end of its natural life span…

‘The wolf’s condition was likely a contributing factor for its unusual behavior and this remains a very rare incident.

Rampart Creek Campground, where the Rispolis were staying, has been reopened.
