Liverpool vs Chelsea referee insists she can handle UEFA Super Cup final pressure

Super Cup final referee Stephanie Frappart is not afraid of writing history as she becomes the first woman to take charge of a major UEFA men’s game.

The French official has already taken charge of Ligue 1 games in her home country, and also refereed the FIFA Women’s World Cup final this summer.

And she says there is no fear for her or her all-female team of officials as they enter the record books for the final between Liverpool and Chelsea .

She is assisted by Manuela Nicolosi from Italy and Ireland’s Michelle O’Neill – the trio which officiated the Women’s World Cup final in June, and the Frenchwoman said: “I think I think we’re the same (as male referees), we have to prove technically and tactically we’re ready. I’m not afraid about that.

Frappart after the Women’s World Cup final last month

“This is not the first appointment for me [in men’s football], I know really the meaning of that – I think there is not a lot of difference (between men’s and women’s football) because football is the same.

“It’s the same rules so I will do the same as the women’s game. We have proved ourselves technically and physically that we are the same as the men. We are ready – e are not afraid.”

Frappart became the first woman to referee a France Ligue 2 game in 2014, and then stepped up to Ligue 1 last season, officiating a game between Amiens and Strasbourg in April, before standing in the Women’s World Cup.

The referee will be joined by the same two assistants that oversaw the Women’s World Cup final with her

She is not the first woman to referee a a top-flight men’s game in Europe’s top leagues, with Germany’s Bibiana Steinhaus officiating in the Bundesliga in 2017.

But this is first time a woman has taken centre stage in UEFA game, and she will not hide from controversy or tough decisions.

Speaking about the refereeing team, Roberto Rossetti, chairman of the UEFA Referees Committee, said, he has full faith in the trio, and fourth official fourth official Cuneyt Cakir, added:

“They have courage. They don’t hesitate to give unpopular decisions… you’ll see that tomorrow, believe me!”

Frappart nodded along vigorously to that assessment, and he said she is ready for the challenge: “Refereeing is the same, football is the same, I would do the same I do in women’s football.”
