Deadly fire kills toddler and five-year-old boy

A fast-moving New Jersey house fire has killed a two-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl and has injured at least a dozen other people, half of them firefighters.

The fire at the multifamily home in Union City started shortly before 9am Friday.

It quickly consumed the home and damaged a neighboring house, sending flames and smoke high into the sky.

The identities of the victims have not been released, but authorities believe that those injured in the fire are not all from the same family, according to NBC 4 New York.

The fire, which quickly escalated into a five-alarm blaze, was brought under control about 30 minutes after ripping through the New Jersey homes.

Witnesses told NBC 4 that they saw injured children being carried out in stretchers.

‘They were all unconscious, one child’s face was burned,’ neighbor Eddei Miranda said.

Eudes Hernandez, a friend of a family whose child died, said he desperately tried to help by running into the burning building and get everyone out but was forced to stop once the smoke became too intense.

About 30 people were displaced by the fire and are receiving help from the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Authorities have asked residents to avoid 25th Street near Bergenline and New York avenues, NBC 4 News reported.
