New York woman is brutally attacked by a pack of dogs

A woman who was attacked and mauled by five dogs just minutes before her home is physically and emotionally scarred for life due to the trauma she endured during the brutal incident.

Nadia Raswan, 64, of Brooklyn, New York, was enjoying a morning stroll at her local park when she was ambushed by the crazed pack, which included two pit bulls.

The terrified mom was knocked to the ground and lay helpless and bleeding as the animals, who were not on leashes, sank their teeth into her right leg and arm.

Nadia, who is from Egypt but moved to the US in 2013, said she was pounced upon by five dogs, by a basketball court in front of her house.

She said: ‘They were just barking like all dogs do and I didn’t pay much attention, expecting that their owners would hold them.’

‘Their owners told them something that I didn’t understand.’

‘I thought that they were calling them or something, but after that the dogs attacked me and knocked me down to the ground.’

‘They bit me many times and took my flesh out. I was bleeding so much. I was screaming.’

The dogs’ owners – four men and one woman – allegedly stood watching for the duration of the two-minute attack before one of them pulled the dogs off Nadia and then fled St Andrew’s Park in Brooklyn.

She said: ‘Eventually one of them pulled the dogs off me, but they ran out of the basketball court. I managed to get up and make it back to my apartment.’

‘I woke my daughter up and she saw that there was a patrol car on the street below, and the police called an ambulance.’

‘When I got to the hospital I had giant bruises on my left arm and deep wounds on my right leg which had to have nine stitches.’

But unfortunately, since the incident, Nadia has battled repeated infections since the June 2017 attack and said she no longer feels safe enough to walk around her neighborhood.

Nadia, who does not work, was admitted to hospital for five days in July to cope with an infection in one of the wounds.

She said: ‘I followed the wound care instructions but unfortunately it got infected more than one time.’

‘I had to be hospitalized and go the emergency room many times and have many follow up appointments and tests.’

Nadia also said the attack has impacted her family and she is still haunted by nightmares reliving the trauma.

She said: ‘Me and my family are suffering from this attack physically and psychologically. I still have a scar and skin color changed. My doctor told me it will not get back to normal ever again.’

‘Me and especially my two daughters are still having disturbed sleep because of the nightmares.’

‘One of them has phobia from dogs already which worsened a lot after the incident and the other daughter started seeing a therapist recently.’

‘I don’t feel as safe as before going for my regular morning walks as prescribed by my cardiologist and my family doesn’t feel assured when I go out on my own as they used to.’

Nadia’s daughter Rania Mahmoud, 27, a medical interpreter, said that her mom has changed drastically since the attack because Nadia is now afraid of dogs.

Rania said: ‘When a dog is around she will be watching carefully trying to stay away as opposed to before when she never had any problem with dogs and felt normal around them.

She added: ‘In general we feel insecure.’

Nadia emigrated to the USA in 2013 with her husband, who works in security, and daughters Rania and Iman Mahmoud, 25, a student.

Nadia said: ‘We moved here five years ago from Egypt after we retired looking for a better and safer life but our impressions have been totally changed after this incident.’

The mom said her right leg will be permanently scarred after the attack and she and her daughters have sought professional help to cope with the trauma.

The New York Police Department confirmed its officers attended the scene and that the dog owners responsible for the unprovoked attack have yet to be identified despite a filed report.
