Summer signing Tiago Silva scored his first Nottingham Forest goal to edge the Championship side past Fleetwood and set up a meeting with fierce East Midlands rivals Derby County in round two of the Carabao Cup.
After a goalless first half, Silva collected John Bostock’s pass and cut inside his marker before firing into the roof of the net.
Fleetwood had chances to level but could not find a way past Brice Samba.
The Forest keeper saved from Paul Coutts, Ross Wallace and Wes Burns, while Conor McAleny fired wide.
Joey Barton’s League One side also went closest in the first half when Samba, making his debut after arriving from French Ligue 2 side Caen, clawed away Peter Clarke’s header from a corner.
But Forest started the second half the stronger side and saw Sammy Ameobi glance a header over the bar not long before Silva’s winner.
