Sir Rod Stewart slams Celtic’s defeat to Cluj and questions decision to bench Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli

CELTIC fan Sir Rod Stewart says complacency is the reason the Scottish champions were dumped out of the Champions League last night by Cluj.

In an interview with Jim White on talkSPORT, the Hoops-daft rocker questioned gaffer Neil Lennon’s decision to start midfielder Callum McGregor at left-back.

He also slammed Lennon’s call to leave new signings Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli – who cost £7million and £3m respectively – on the bench for the third-round qualifying clash.

Sir Rod, 74, said: “We took it too lightly, we thought we were going to win.

“Playing McGregor at left-back was a mistake I believe.

“I don’t understand why we didn’t have Jullien playing, a £7million player we’ve bought, and Bolingoli, a £3m player.

“Neither were in the team. I don’t understand it.

“Otherwise, it’s just one of those days. We have to move on.

“Celtic are never going to win the Champions League. We know that.

“It’s income for us – £30million we blew last night by not qualifying.”

Last night Bhoys legend Chris Sutton blamed the club’s transfer policy for their exit from European football’s top competition.

Sir Rod – who was at the game with seven-year-old son Aiden – said: “Chris is not wrong.

“It’s football – it’s a weird old animal.

“Who thought Leicester would win the league? These things happen in football all the time.

“We go onto the Europa League and let’s go for nine in a row.”

The music legend couldn’t hide his frustrations as he brought the chat with Sky Sports News legend Jim to a close.

Sir Rod added: “Us spending £7m is a big deal.

“How are we ever going to win the Champions League by paying £7m for a player?
