The 20-year-old was removed from the show just nine days after it began, after it was confirmed by ITV that he had broken a rule and that it was mutually decided between him and show bosses that he should leave.
So just what happened – and what rule did he break?
Here’s what we know…
Why did Love Island’s Sherif Lanre leave the villa?
Sherif was confirmed on Tuesday to have been kicked out of the villa, with a spokesperson saying: ‘After breaking the villa rules Sherif had conversations with the producers and it was mutually agreed that he would leave the Love Island villa.’
Sherif himself said in a statement: ‘In a case of poor judgement, I broke the villa rules and as a result agreed with the producers that it was best for me to leave the villa.
‘I regret that I didn’t conduct myself in the right way and, as a 20 year old guy, it’s something I know I will take on board and learn from.
‘I really enjoyed my time in the villa and look forward to catching up with everyone on the outside.’ Sherif isn’t the only Love Island contestant to have had his time in the Villa cut short for rule-breaking.
The chef and rugby player had been coupled up with Anna Vakili since he arrived on the island, with the pair having grown increasingly close in recent days.
It’s not yet been confirmed whether he will be replaced – but with new Islanders being brought in regularly, it’s likely that somebody will step into the breach soon enough.
What rule did Sherif break?
It hasn’t been confirmed what rule Sherif broke which led to him being removed from the villa – with an insider saying that it was a ‘silly mistake’ and that Sherif knew immediately he would have to leave.
The source added that it was not a ‘criminal matter’ and would not be taken further – but that he was immediately summoned to the Beach Hut after it happened and agreed to leave,
His family have no idea what’s been going on either although they’ve taken to social media to say how proud they are of him.
‘It’s unclear why at the moment but hopefully we will be able to update ASAP But he will STILL be appearing on our screens tonight.’ they said on Instagram.
They added: ‘Everyone on endz is BEYOND proud and excited to have him home. Comment ‘heart’ down bellow to send your love through the E-WAVES.’
Meanwhile Love Island fans have already been sending social media into meltdown with their theories as to what might have happened.
One rumour has suggested he might have smuggled a mobile phone into the villa – which is a no-no as Islanders are not allowed contact with the outside world, and can only use the phones supplied to them by producers which are used to communicate information to them relating to the show.
However, that hasn’t been confirmed either – meaning we’ll probably just have to keep on waiting to find out what really happened…
Love Island continues on ITV2 on Tuesday night at 9pm.
